Abstract: The $p$-parabolic extension from $\mathbb{R}^n$ to the upper
half space allows one to define a non-linear vertical maximal function.
I shall discuss why this maximal function does not increase the $p$-energy.

This is based on joint work with Simon Bortz and Olli Saari. We expect
that similar phenomena arise for more general gradient flow maximal
functions and if time allows, I shall also touch upon the special case
of elliptic divergence form operators with measurable coeefficients.
